The Master Locksmiths Access Key (MLAK) system is a unique and innovative system that uses a universal lock and key to allow people with special needs to access dedicated public facilities 24 hours a day. It was developed to assist increase the availability of accessible, clean and functioning public facilities for the people that don’t always have the convenience of using standard facilities.
The MLAK program was launched back in 1994, and it was a joint venture between the Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia (MLAA), Pittwater Council and ACROD.
MLAK is a locking system developed by Master Locksmiths and Spinal Cord Injuries Australia.
MLAK stands for Master Locksmiths Access Key.
Where is the MLAK System Used?
Since its launch, the MLAK system has been widely used throughout Australia. It has been installed at railway stations, accessible toilets in Council facilities, shopping centres, and in National Parks. The MLAK system is also used for adaptive playground equipment such as the Liberty Swing.
The key system has been adopted by many organizations, including Councils. They are used in public areas of facilities, often found on gates Changing Places, accessible Liberty Swings in playgrounds and other areas where people with disabilities can access at any time they wish.
They can now be used with AccessLatch in conjunction with a MagnaLatch to access community facilities such as:
- Preschools
- Childcare centres
- Community centres
- Maternal child health centres
- Swimming pools and aquatic centres and
- Community Playgrounds
Councils typically provide these keys for free to community members. Alternatively, the keys can only be purchased from the Master Locksmiths Association of Australia and those wishing to get one can only do so with written authority from their doctor, a disability organisation or a community health centre.
Who’s Eligible?
Eligibility is restricted to people who have a disability or have written authority from one of the following:
- a doctor
- a disability organisation
- community health centre
- the owner or manager of a building with an accessible toilet on site
How to get an MLAK?
MLAK keys are available for purchase from:
- Business Members of the Master Locksmiths Association or from the MLAA’s National Support Office.
- Most councils throughout Australia who have MLAK keys in use for assets provide them free of charge.
MLAK keys can only be purchased from MLAA locksmiths, or the MLAA Support Office.
